At the start of 2024, the Highlands and Islands area of Kirkcaldy faced real challenges that left residents feeling the area had hit rock bottom.

But the community decided to take action.

By consistently reporting crime and anti-social behaviour, residents caught the attention of Police Scotland, leading to higher visibility, quicker responses, and a clear drop in problems. Fife Council also stepped up - improving property security, enhancing cleaning routines, making environmental upgrades, and responding directly to residents' concerns.

Meanwhile, locals have been tackling ongoing issues like littering and dog fouling with support from Safer Communities. Community litter-picks are now attracting plenty of helping hands, and some residents are taking the initiative to maintain shrub beds. All three local Councillors remain actively involved, and CCTV will soon be installed to boost security further.

The Highlands & Islands Tenants and Residents Association is proud of how far the area has come. As Chairperson Alan Henderson reflects, strong cooperation and community spirit have driven the turnaround. 

The message is clear: when a community works together, real progress happens.
